How to Choose the Right Moving Company

moving company You have built your dream home and the move-in date is quickly approaching. Now it is time to pack up your current home, gather your stuff out of storage, and prepare to move into your new home. For many people moving can be a bit of a headache and that is why many end up hiring a moving company to do it for them. It is very important to do your research when searching for a reputable moving company to hire. Your belongings are very important and you want to make sure they are treated with the utmost care and respect. Here are a few things to consider when you are searching for a moving company.

Are they Licensed?

This is one of the first, and most important, things to verify when searching for a moving company. You want to look into the company’s legal status. Most companies say they are licensed and insured but it is important that you do the research yourself for verification.

In-State moves: Many states have implemented rules and regulations to monitor moving companies at a local level. The Department of Transportation or the Public Utilities Commission are the authorities responsible for the oversight of these companies. If you are looking for more information it is best to contact them for more details or questions.

Out-of-State moves: If you are moving out of state and want more information or details on a moving company, check with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This agency grants permits to all moving companies engaged in interstate transportaion of household goods. They regulate the safety, economic and legal compliance audits to protect consumers. This data is available as a public record and you can check to see if the mover you choose is licensed and insured.

Are they Reputable?

Now that you have done your research into their validity, look at their reputation. This does not mean choose a company with the best ad campaigns or the catchiest slogans. Read reviews, get input from others who have used the company. Moving can be stressful so it is likely that you will get honest opinions from those who have used the company in the past. If they took care of them during that stressful time and made it a little easier, most likely you will get some honest feedback.  Another thing to notice is how the company responded to the reviews and feedback online. Was their presence made known both on their website and their social media accounts? Did it seem that they genuinely cared for their company reputation if they did receive a negative feedback? This is likely to show how much they care for their customers and their business.

Do They Bring an Added Value?

By now you have narrowed down your search. You have found a reputable, trustworthy company to hire, but don’t stop there. You want to ask them questions about how they go about disassembling furniture and electronics, the types of equipment they use for large or unique furniture? What types of packing materials do they use to keep your valuables safe from damage? Do they offer any other added benefits such as a cleaning service after the move is over? Do they offer storage (if needed)? These are all great things to consider because you might discover you need additional services as your moving day approaches.

The Red Flags

We cannot give you this list without advising you on what “Red Flags” to watch out for. If you are searching a moving company and they do not have a listed physical address, scratch them off of your list. If they do not give you a written estimate when doing a walk-through of your home also scratch them off of your list. Other things to watch out for are requiring a large deposit down before a move, estimating an extremely high or low price for the move, not giving you the FMCSA booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”, or asking you to sign blank or incomplete documents.

We know that this process is both exciting and sometimes stressful so we hope that you can use this as a guide when choosing a moving company to help you on your big moving day. If you would like more information on some moving companies in the area that we recommend contact P&D Builders.

Things to Consider When Building Your Home-Part #1

New Home Build

So you want to build your dream home!? You have shopped around, found the perfect builder and floor plan, got your loan approval, and now you are ready to start the process – or so you thought! The floor plan that you have picked out seems perfect for your life now but what about years from now? Have you thought about certain details of your new home that you might long for in the future or realize you don’t have a need for in another two years? These are small details that many first time new home builders don’t consider. When building a new home it is crucial that you look at your home from many angles. For instance, you might want to consider building a 4-bedroom home instead of a 3-bedroom home if you are thinking about expanding your family in a few years.  That is just one of the many things you will want to consider in this process of building your dream home.

Consideration 1# –Pay Attention to your HVAC System

If you do not plan well this can lead to issues with moisture and mold growth which can cause health problems. You also want to take into consideration the size of the home in comparison to the size of the unit. Make sure that come winter time when temperatures are below freezing your home stays warm.

 Consideration #2- Space Planning

If you are building a smaller to medium sized home and you want it to be efficient for your everyday life then space planning and design are crucial. When building, you want to pay close attention to where you are placing your storage space. Do you need a huge walk-in closet in every room? Could that space be added to the bedroom or a bathroom? Pay attention to where you put closets and make sure that there is also one in the main hallway. Do you want a foyer closet? If so, consider the climate that you live in. For instance, if you live in Florida you may not need a large foyer closet for coats. You want to be sure that you consider every part of your lifestyle and living conditions when space planning.

Consideration #3- Overall Planning

When building and customizing your new home you should take your lifestyle and habits into consideration. Are you planning on staying in this home for a long time? Will you need more rooms in the future if you are thinking about expanding your family? Will you stay in this home as you reach retirement age and beyond? If so, consider the size of the home or the amount of stairs you are putting in your home as this may be an issue as you age. Considering these factors will ensure that your new home is all you want it to be for many years to come.

Consideration #4- Lighting

Lighting can add so much to a home. It can awaken an otherwise dull room making it appear larger. If lighting is important to you, make sure you have ample amounts of outlets to plug in lighting fixtures and lamps. If natural lighting is important to you, make sure there are plenty of windows in every room as this will brighten the space. Also you want to consider skylights or recessed lighting if you prefer overhead light such as in a kitchen or family room.

Consideration #5- Under Utilized Rooms

Planning to build a play room, game room, or even a sun room sounds nice, but will it get used to its full advantage? Unused rooms often get dubbed as a dumping ground for junk instead of the original purpose it was built for. If you plan on building one of these types of rooms make sure it can easily transition as your life changes or your family expands, otherwise it become useless space that could have been used for something else.

‘Things to Consider When Building Your Home’ -part #2 continues next month as we explore more areas you will want to think about when beginning the building process.

MythBusting the Myths About Winter Home Building

Construction Projects during the winterSome folks say that you shouldn’t start to build a home in the winter. Not true!  Here are a few reasons why it is perfectly fine to start the process now:

MYTH # 1. Cold weather plays havoc with lumber exposed to the elements in the framing stage.

Since inclement weather is likely to occur, the lumber industry continues to develop procedures that are used in the milling process that inhibit the effects of poor weather. You certainly get wet days at any time of year, but the summer has higher humidity that can keep the lumber from drying out after a rain.

Instead, lumber that is exposed to the more infrequent rainy day in the dead of winter is exposed to very low humidity and has a chance to lose the absorbed moisture during the remainder of the construction process. Homes under construction must be heated in the winter and along with the low humidity the drying out is accelerated.

MYTH # 2. Workmanship suffers when construction workers are fighting the elements.

It is obvious that most everyone would prefer to have beautiful weather to perform their work in but seldom are conditions perfect and that fact is accepted as part of the job. No matter the time of year, there always seem to be some challenge to overcome, be it wind, rain, sweltering heat and humidity or numbing cold. It may be difficult to believe but there are a fair amount of workers who prefer the cold to working in heat and humidity.

MYTH # 3. Homes built in the winter are priced higher than homes built in the summer.

While it is true that there are additional expenses to account for to get a project completed in the winter, compared to the overall cost of the project they are relatively insignificant. These additional costs may however, be less than the increased price for materials and labor in early spring.

So if you are waiting to start the process of building your new home due to the time of year, forget about it.  Call P&D Builders today and start to review some locations and floor plans.

4 Reasons to Consider New Home Construction

Today’s new homes offer more benefits than ever before, and many home buyers want a new-construction house. Before you make the decision on whether to buy a new or existing home, consider the top four reasons why buyers prefer new construction.

 1.       It’s New!

You are the first person to live in the home, so everything is brand new and clean. The carpet or hardwood flooring is new, the cabinets are in perfect condition, the kitchen might have a center island and granite counter tops and the appliances are all brand-new and unused.  You also won’t have to worry about replacing or repairing out of date, damaged or worn materials and appliances.

2.       Customize Your Home

With new construction, you can build your home exactly how you want it. You can personalize every aspect of your home to reflect your style and meet the specific needs of your family. Choose your favorite cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, fixtures, and add unique features to your home.

3.       Reduced Maintenance

An older home may require upgrades and repairs in order to make it comfortable and functional for your family. Unlike older homes, the products used in new homes are brand-new and under warranty, so you get the full lifespan of everything in your home.  The roof, appliances, countertops, water heater etc. and other components of your home feature the latest design and building materials, which can require less care and maintenance and should offer you years of use before needing to be replaced.

 4.       Energy Efficient & Technologically Current

New homes today are more energy efficient and technologically current than older homes. With new construction, you’ll get a home that meets current building codes for energy efficiency. Better insulation technologies, modern heating and cooling systems, energy efficient windows, the latest appliances and features, and the latest communication, security, home office and entertainment technologies are just some of the benefits of a new construction homes. With an older home, you may need to upgrade the insulation, furnace and air condition systems and replace windows in order to make the home more energy efficient.
