Easy Tips To Make Your Home More Eco-friendly

Hands protecting green energy house concept

Incorporating green practices into your home can be easier and cheaper than you think! We aren’t talking higher priced changes such as solar panels or buying a new ecofriendly car. We want to help people start out with the small, easier changes first then tackle the other ones when they feel they are ready!

You can have an eco-conscious home without building one from the group up. From switching the LED light bulbs to installing a toilet that uses less water, there are a number of ways to make your home a little greener.

First things first, changing the light bulbs you buy is such an easy solution that will save you money in the long run. LED light bulbs have a longer life and use less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes so they are perfect for any space.

Repurposed materials is another way to make your space not only more ecofriendly but can also be a great addition to your interior design. Countertops, tables, headboards, flooring can all be repurposed and give your space a sense of originality. Some examples of materials that could replace your countertops would be recycled steel or reclaimed wood. Environmentally friendly flooring options are not so hard to find. Flooring made from cork, linoleum and bamboo are not only renewable materials but also assist in home insulation efforts. Linoleum, in particular, is known for a long lifespan, which is always great to hear!

Water conversation is something every household could get better at. Even if you don’t want to make any large purchases right now, changing your habits of long showers and leaving the water running when you brush your teeth are two ways to not use as much water that you can do for FREE. It can even save you money on your water bill! But if you want to take water conservation to the next step, Stealth System toilets (www.niagaracorp.com/stealth) uses less than one gallon of water per flush. An average toilet uses three gallons per flush.  Another great fix would be purchasing tankless water heaters which skip the inefficient and wasteful process of reheating hot water in a tank. They heat on demand so no energy is wasted keeping water hot. You will see savings in energy costs and you will save on water usage because you will no longer be running water while waiting for it to heat up.

These are a couple simple changes you can make starting as early as today to make your home more ecofriendly and energy efficient. Help the environment, one change at a time!

It’s Closer Than You Think…2015 BIA Parade of Homes

BIA Parade of Homes, Columbus Ohio, P&D Builders, custom home builder

{The 2014 BIA Parade Home}

Can you believe we are already approaching the middle of the summer  and the 2015 BIA Parade of Homes is closer than you think! As previously mentioned, the Parade of Homes will be taking place in September and going through the first part of October. With all of the beauty that the Fall season has to offer, it seemed like a perfect time to showcase the lovely homes that will be on display.

The Northstar Community, located in Sunbury, will be the home of the 2015 BIA Parade of Homes. With its close proximity to I-71 it is easily accessible and much closer than you might guess. Located just off of the 36/37 exit, which is the exit right after Polaris, it only takes a mere 25 minutes to get to downtown Columbus! Believe it or not, this is a shorter driving distance than last year’s Parade of Homes, which was located at Trail’s End (30 minutes to downtown) and Jerome Village in Dublin (also about 30 minutes to downtown).

We understand that location is key but what about the great amenities that the Northstar Communities has to offer?! Northstar Communities makes living there a dream! With an 18-hole, semi-private golf course, fitness center, tennis courts and even a 7,300 square foot pool, it will be like you are on vacation in your own backyard. If you want to throw a dinner party, or celebration of some sort, Northstar Communities offers a 18,000 square foot clubhouse and banquet facility for any of those needs. And because part of what makes the Northstar Community so wonderful is the beautiful nature that surrounds it, you will get 800 acres of green space that includes parks, ponds and walking paths.

The Northstar Community also lies within the Big Walnut school district with has received an “Excellent” designation from the Ohio Department of Education for outstanding student achievement every year since 2005. This year Big Walnut had a 94% high school 4-year graduation rate.

With the location of the Northstar Community being so close to shopping, dining, and other retail businesses, combined with the amazing amenities and great school district, this community makes the perfect place to raise a family or relax after retirement. We hope to see you out at the 2015 BIA Parade of Homes to see our beautiful home and all that you can come to love about the Northstar Community.
